Track and Trace of Fast-Moving Consumer Goods

There has been exponential growth in the demand of fast-moving consumer goods (FMCGs) or consumer packaged goods (CPG) which are often inelastic products which often touch every part of consumer life; including durable essential household items, perishable and packaged foods, beverages, toiletries, cosmetics, over-the-counter drugs and more. These types of products are typically characterised as frequent purchase goods, offered at low prices, with a short shelf life and have rapid consumption. They are classically sold at high volume and are delivered through an extensive and often complex distribution network.

The logistics supply chain is crucial in the success of FMCG distribution. Transportation of FMCG products are in high demand where the timed delivery of often perishable goods to customers is crucial. Managing and maintaining complex schedules and delivery routes can often be challenging as the distribution network for high paced products is so widespread, which means tracking products between the merchant and the recipient is often very difficult. So the requirement for a Proof of Delivery note has become an essential piece of certification to prove the shipment has reached its final destination.

What is the importance of Proof of Delivery?

The Proof of Delivery (POD) function acts as a receipt to prove that a delivery has been completed. The POD provides accountability that the products have left the merchant’s premises and has reached its recipient. Typically finalised by a signature on the receipt, a POD normally includes important information such as the recipient’s name, time and date of delivery, address, contents of delivery and other related information.

Originally produced as a 2 copy hand written document to be signed and kept by the recipient and the merchant, ways to speed up the accuracy and tacking of this service has evolved. Technology has been introduced where drivers now typically use handheld PDA devices connected to either a portable printer to provide a printed form of receipt once signed onscreen by the recipient or producing an electronic receipt which can be sent directly to the customer upon signature signoff. Printed receipts provide improved accuracy, immediate confirmation of the transaction and can be tailored depending on the recipient’s requirements.
